The installation exhibits more than forty smartphones displaying nudes of the artist, collected over the time frame of two years. Short video clips and photos sent through different social media apps ( snapchat and instagram) to recipients that remain anonymous to the viewer. Some display short messages, AR filters, and animations, offering only one side of a conversation, thus gradually and carefully constructing a virtual image of the unknown recipients. actual data explores the distinction between digital and analog communication and the actualization of digital data while portraying a reclamation of female sexuality. Referencing Sandy Stone's Split Subjects, Not Atoms, the imagery of actual data represents a visual form of data compression, investigating the actualization of private data (person-to-person sharing) into the physical space, robbing it of its seeming ephemerality. The piece deals with the ethics of data handling and the differentiation between “real” “actual” and “virtual”.
